Today we are celebrating the 95th birthday of ex South African president Nelson Mandela. Mandela was instrumental in bringing about a peaceful change to democracy in South Africa, and has become an international icon of peace and reconciliation. After 27 years in prison, Mandela led negotiations with F.W de Klerk to abolish apartheid and establish multiracial elections in 1994. The ANC won the elections and Nelson Mandela was appointed as the new President of South Africa. As President, Mandela formed a Government of National Unity to diffuse ethnic tensions and initiated the Truth and Reconciliation Commission to investigate past human rights abuses in South Africa. As an elder statesman, Nelson Mandela has focused on combating poverty and HIV/AIDS through the Nelson Mandela Foundation.
