Johannesburg is situated on the eastern plateau of the Highveld in Gauteng, and is the largest and wealthiest city in South Africa. Johannesburg is the provincial capital of Gauteng in South Africa and is also the financial centre of South Africa. The city has its beginnings in the gold rush that occurred in the Witwatersrand area, which started off a large scale gold trade. Over the years, many people have moved to the area looking for work and it has made Johannesburg the most populated city in the country.

Today Johannesburg has more than one major CBD area; some of these include Sandton and Rosebank amongst others. Johannesburg has grown over the years and there has been a tremendous Urban Sprawl radiating outwards from the Johannesburg city centre. Some of the Northern suburbs include some very affluent areas like Mellville, Parktown, and Houghton and of course Sandton. The further you move out the more agricultural holdings you’ll find. These areas are also more popular with the security estates and complexes.

Even though Johannesburg is not near any oceans or major rivers, there are a number of streams or springs that have now been channelized. These streams take on the names of some of the farms that were originally in the area. Names like Braamfontein, Rietfontein and Zandfontein among others. These streams also provide some green belts in the area and most of them are part of Parks or Golf courses. One example is the James and Ethel Gray Park, which also leads to the Killarney Golf Club. There is also the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens and Emmarentia Dam that falls under this whole system. Some other interesting places in Johannesburg include the Johannesburg Zoo, the Apartheid Museum, and Gold Reef City.

Each suburb has access to a number of different public and private schools in the Johannesburg area. The main universities include the University of the Witwatersrand and the University of Johannesburg. There are also many other private Colleges in the region. The entire Johannesburg area offers visitors and residents a number of choices when it comes to shopping centres. There are many large and popular Malls throughout the area such as the Mall of Africa, Melrose Arch and the Sandton City Shopping centre.

Traveling around Johannesburg is relatively easy because of the number of main roads and highways throughout the area. Also, if you find the roads a bit too congested, you have access to the Gautrain. This railway service can take you through to Pretoria and the OR Tambo International Airport. This airport provides flights to both domestic as well as International destinations. Another important airport in Johannesburg is the Lanseria Airport.
