Bookkeeping is the process of recording financial transactions such as purchases, sales, receipts and payments. Bookkeeping is not the same as accounting but is one of the functions in the accounting process. The bookkeeper records financial transactions and sends it to the accountant who uses the information to create reports and file forms with government agencies. A bookkeeper is responsible for the books at the trial balance stage which is used by the accountant to prepare income statements and balance sheets. Single-entry bookkeeping and double-entry bookkeeping are common methods of bookkeeping.
