The Durban Botanic Gardens is Durban’s oldest public institution and is currently the oldest surviving botanic garden on the African continent. Developed in 1849 as a botanic station, the Gardens has progressed as part of a network of botanic gardens internationally to focus on core areas of biodiversity, education, heritage, research, horticultural excellence and green innovation.
The Durban Botanic Gardens maintain both indigenous and exotic plant collections from the sub-tropics including a number of threatened plant collections such as cycads and palms. The Gardens regularly feature theme-based tours which include topics like Heritage Trees and People & Plants.
The Visitors Complex at the Durban Botanic Gardens offers two versatile venues for team building events and conferences in Durban. The Hall can accommodate up to 250 delegates cinema style and 250 delegates at round tables. The smaller boardroom can accommodate sixteen people. Other venues available at the Durban Botanic Gardens include the Lake Area and the Amphitheatre.
